The Outdoor Classroom

At Segray, our passion for nature and hands-on experiences is reflected in our Outdoor Classroom.  As one of the Pillars of Segray, our commitment to the outdoor classroom is reflected in our dedicated Outdoor Classroom Coordinator, investment in fixtures and materials specifically for the outdoor classroom, as well as our utilization of the outdoor classroom every day, by every class, at Segray.

Our outdoor classroom starts with a simple mission: introduce children to learning through exploration of nature, recycled materials, gardening, and composting in a nurturing preschool setting, so that we may motivate them to “think globally by acting locally.”

To fulfill our mission, our Outdoor Classroom Coordinator develops a nature-based curriculum, which includes:

  • Developing themes and activities around our natural environment.

  • Explaining how environmental occurrences affect our everyday lives.

  • Teaching with materials from nature and recycled items.

  • Encouraging discussion and thoughtful reflection around creating a greener environment.

  • Deepening a connection with nature and thereby an instinct to respect and protect it.

Benefits of an Outdoor Classroom

Since children are likely to become more invested in an activity through interaction, the outdoor Classroom seeks to teach your child how to protect their health and the environment through interactive play and exploration.

This will help them create a lasting commitment to conservation, inspire responsible stewardship in their local communities, promote intellectual development, as well as prompt them to ask questions and analyze contextual information.

Our Green Pledge

Segray is taking action to become greener to help protect our environment. Our green pledge means practicing sustainability within our school community and beyond. We have incorporated composting, and we use recyclable materials wherever possible. We’ve switched to using green cleaning supplies, and reusable tableware instead of disposable. Additionally, we have established a weekly school theme called “No Waste Wednesdays.”

We encourage our Segray families to take the green pledge and work with us to preserve nature for future generations.
